Karekare beach main carpark

Service Description

Karekare is renowned as one of the most cinematic stretches of coastline within an hour of the city. We start with a short walk to a thirty metre waterfall, head back through some bush then across the black sand dunes to the open coast, and loop back along the river to the carpark, photographing as we go. Four completely different photographic options in two hours, all within a fifteen minute walk of each other. The Route > Karekare Falls — ten minutes in on a flat track, a two tiered waterfall dropping into a pool > Out through the bush and dunes — black sand, marram grass, wind carved ripples > The coast — surf, spray, the long sweep of the beach and the headlands > Home along the river — reflections and patterns in the wet sand Gentle and mostly flat, with soft sand underfoot in the middle section. Skills & Techniques > Landscape composition — foreground, middle ground and distance, using the Watchman and the headlands as anchors > Framing natural scenes — leading lines in the river and the dunes > Capturing movement in water — fast shutter to freeze the spray, slow shutter to silk the falls > Exposing for black sand — black iron sand and white surf Note: Rain date is TBC ********* Nature photography using digital SLR cameras. This is a free workshop thanks to a grant from the Creative Communities Northwest. Students aged 8 to 18 years old will learn how to use a digital SLR camera to take photos at this location. IMAgEN8 provides digital SLR cameras for the participants, and our teachers teach them the technical and artistic aspects of photography. Students receive digital copies of their best pictures, and are published in books and the Compassionate Nature magazine. IMAgEN8’s professional photography tutors bring a diversity of experiences, styles and interests. They are easy going, fun and enthusiastic, and you’ll enjoy them guiding your photography learning with their friendly style and insights from their years of combined experience. You’ll feel confident about using a digital SLR camera, like the ones professionals use, in the company of a small group of nature and photography lovers.
